Large, deep-bodied, herring-like fish. A row of dark spots on the upper side, but some or most of these may be obscured by the silvering on the scales. Gill-rakers shorter and more widely-spaced than in the allis shad-in adults, not more than 30 on the lower limb of the first gill-arch. Grows to about 3.5 lb. Shoals ascend rivers to spawn, but usually do not travel beyond the head of the tide. A landlocked form occurs in the lakes of Killarney.
